Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) has become increasingly influential in various aspects of modern life, including education. This research aimed to investigate the benefits, limitations, and general concerns surrounding ChatGPT, an AI-powered bot, in the contexts of English language teaching (ELT), civilization teaching, and academia. The research employed a descriptive approach and utilized a mixed methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative data, to explore the usage of ChatGPT in academia, examine EFL teachers' attitudes towards its effectiveness in ELT and civilization teaching, and identify general concerns expressed by teachers regarding its use. The findings of this study concluded that ChatGPT serves as an effective and valuable tool in academia, ELT, and civilization teaching, enhancing and facilitating the learning process. Furthermore, the results indicated that teachers hold positive attitudes towards ChatGPT's effectiveness in ELT and civilization teaching. However, teachers did express general concerns about its use, particularly regarding its potential impact on EFL students. Essentially, this research highlights the significant role of ChatGPT as an effective tool in academia, ELT, and civilization teaching. It acknowledges the positive attitudes of teachers towards its effectiveness in these domains. However, it also emphasizes the need to address concerns related to its use, specifically its implications for EFL students
