Abstract

This study addresses the topic of education under colonialism through a comparative study of the Tunisian and Moroccan experiences. It begins by examining the state of education in both countries prior to the imposition of the protectorate, highlighting its reliance on traditional and religious institutions and its role in preserving Arab-Islamic identity. The study then examines the colonial educational policy in Tunisia, shedding light on the most important measures taken by France in the field of education, its objectives and methods, as well as the Tunisian response to them. It also studies the colonial educational policy in Morocco, taking into account the distinction between the Sultanate zone under French influence and the Khalifian zone under Spanish influence, and identifying the most important institutions and schools and the Moroccan position on this policy. Finally, the two experiences, Tunisian and Moroccan, are compared in terms of principles, objectives, and outcomes. The study reveals similarities in the employment of education to serve colonial interests and to influence society and culture, alongside differences imposed by the historical and political circumstances of each country. The study concludes that education was not merely a colonial instrument, but also became a field for preserving Arab-Islamic identity and a means that contributed to spreading national awareness and resisting colonialism in both countries.
