Abstract

The present research aims to investigate the use of the literary texts at the Algerian university. This work is mainly an attempt to investigate the importance of literary works in teaching the foreign culture as the importance in teaching the foreign language that can easily help them to improve their cultural competence. The basic hypothesis adopted in this work suggests that teaching foreign culture through literary texts and literature in general will enhance students‘ cultural attitudes. The research technique used for this work is descriptive. That is, it aims to describe the literary works as an approach and its benefits in enhancing students‘ cultural content. To carry out this research, the required data are gathered through two questionnaires, one for first year master students and another one for their teachers at the department of English Laghouat University during the academic year (2018 -2019). The results obtained suggest that literary texts are an effective tool for increasing learner‘s cultural performance. Based on the results, the hypothesis as students need to enhance learners‘ culture skill was confirmed. Finally, this work providing the point of view of teachers on whether literary texts carry culture, and whether teaching them involves teaching culture as well
