Abstract

Abstract This study aimed to explore the attitudes of students at Amar Telidji University of Laghouat toward the media blackout imposed on humanitarian crimes committed during the war on the Gaza Strip. It also sought to identify the cognitive, affective, and behavioral dimensions of these attitudes, as well as to highlight the nature of media blackout practices and their role in shaping public perceptions of humanitarian issues and events. The study adopted the descriptive survey method using the audience survey approach, as it was deemed appropriate for the objectives and nature of the research. The study population consisted of students from Amar Telidji University of Laghouat , while the sample included 140 respondents selected through a purposive (convenience) sampling technique from different academic disciplines and levels. Data were collected through an electronic questionnaire after ensuring its validity and reliability. The findings revealed that media blackout constitutes a communication practice based on selection, bias, and the reframing of events in ways that serve specific agendas and interests. The results also showed that students possessed a high level of awareness regarding the existence of media blackout practices in the coverage of the war on Gaza and demonstrated a critical understanding of the media content related to it. Furthermore, the affective dimension of their attitudes reflected a strong sense of sympathy and solidarity with the victims of the war, while the behavioral dimension was manifested through seeking alternative sources of information, relying on digital media platforms, and using social networking sites to obtain and verify news and information. The study further confirmed the growing role of digital media in breaking information monopolies and providing alternative channels for reporting events, alongside a decline in trust in certain traditional media outlets due to perceived bias and selectivity in their coverage.
