Abstract

Abstract:
This study analyzes the role of Al-Zaytuna Mosque in reviving the reformist movement in Algeria during the period from 1900 to 1954, with a specific focus on the city of Laghouat as a practical example of this influence. The research is grounded in a central question: To what extent did Al-Zaytuna Mosque, through its educational approach and alumni, contribute to fostering religious, social, and reformist awareness in the city of Laghouat?
The study aims to highlight how the Zaytuna-educated elite—scholars and students—helped instill reformist ideals by promoting religious enlightenment, combating superstitions and un-Islamic practices, and encouraging Arabic Islamic education, all in resistance to the French colonial policy that sought to erase national and religious identity.
One of the main findings of the study is that Al-Zaytuna Mosque was not merely a religious institution but served as a platform for disseminating reformist thought across Algeria. Graduates from Laghouat played a vital role in shaping collective awareness by founding cultural clubs and free schools, and by engaging in community-based and religious outreach. The study also reveals that this reformist movement served as a bridge between the Eastern Arab renaissance project and the later approach of the Association of Algerian Muslim Ulama.
The study adopts a historical-analytical methodology, employing qualitative research tools based on local historical documents and sources.
