Abstract
The maternal mortality rate is an indicator of the care provided for pregnant women. The objectives of the study were to calculate the maternal mortality rate in the wilaya of Laghouat and to draw up a profile of the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of cases from January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2021.
Materials and methods: A retrospective descriptive study which had focused on maternal deaths that had reached the health department of the wilaya. The study variables were based on the mandatory declaration of maternal death form.
Results: During the study period, 22 maternal deaths were reported for every 22,163 live births, representing an overall maternal mortality rate (MMR) of 99.26 maternal deaths/100,000 live births. The average age of women was 35 years with extremes ranging from 29 to 46 years
The public sector had recorded almost all the deaths (95.45%) of which nearly half (49%) had occurred in the immediate post-partum period (within the 1st 24 hours), caused in the first place by the hemorrhages during delevrancy with a percentage of 31.81%, followed by COVID19 in 27.3% of cases, pulmonary embolism, amniotic embolism etc. shares the same percentage in 4.5% of cases.
Conclusion: The maternal mortality rate in Laghouat is much higher than the national rate, this could be explained by the inadequate care of parturients in the wilaya, the low socioeconomic conditions of some partners and the remoteness of health structures.
