Abstract
Description
This study aimed to investigate the role of electronic games in reducing participation in physical activity among middle school students through a field study conducted in selected middle schools in Laghouat Province, Algeria. The study was based on the main research problem of determining the extent to which the increasing use of electronic games affects students' participation in physical and sports activities.
The study adopted the descriptive-analytical approach, as it was considered the most appropriate for the nature of the research. A questionnaire was used as the primary data collection instrument and was administered to a sample of middle school students. The collected data were analyzed using appropriate statistical methods to examine the relationship between electronic game use and the level of physical activity among the participants.
The findings revealed that excessive engagement in electronic games contributes to reducing the time allocated to physical activity and promotes a sedentary lifestyle among students. The results also indicated a negative relationship between the number of hours spent playing electronic games and the level of participation in sports activities. Furthermore, the study found that moderate use of electronic games does not constitute a problem in itself; rather, the main concern lies in excessive use at the expense of physical and social activities.
Based on these findings, the study recommends raising awareness among students and their parents about the risks associated with excessive electronic game use, encouraging effective time management, promoting a culture of physical activity within and outside educational institutions, and providing attractive sports programs and activities to enhance students' participation in physical exercise.
