Abstract

Abstract : Impact of rapid weight reduction on power amongst youth male boxers (17-18th years old). Boxers often reduced their body mass prior to competitions. The aim of the present study was to know the most common method of rapid weight reduction;and identify its effect on body composition and power among youth boxers. Questionnaire included 101 boxers, average age 17,42 ± 0,50 years, mean years of practicing boxing 5,13 ± 2,11 years, body weight 65,54 ± 10,42 kg, number of bouts per season 7,68 ± 3,75 , training 9,30 ± 2,10 hours/week, mean age of start to use R.W.R methods 15,20 ± 1,24 years, participant responded to the questionnaire witch focused in the first part on personal information ( e.g. age, body weight, length of practicing boxing, weight class,…etc.) second part focused on body weight reduction methods (e.g. frequency of R.W.R. per season, weight reduction methods, source of information, …etc.) third part problems during weight reduction. Body mass and power assessments were performed during test- retest, included 5 male boxers representing the youth national team. Results showed that most of boxersreduce their body weight by decreasing dietary and fluid intakes combining with increased training and sweat cloth. This caused significant body weight reduction 7,74 ± 1,08 %, fat mass 0,90 ± 0,38%, muscle mass 2,38 ± 0,26 %, body fluids 4,38 ± 0,85 %, with lowering of upper body power level 24,44 ± 6,23 % and lower body power level 13,96 ± 9,96 %. Revealed that the most common rapid weight reduction method amongst youth boxers was by decreasing dietary and fluid intakes combining with increased training and sweat cloth, this resulted body mass reduction by decreasing body fluids more than other masses, furthermore it resulted in lowering of upper body power
