Abstract
Metamaterials are composite materials that are tailored to respond to desired electromagnetic properties that are not found in nature. In this work, smart materials based on metamaterial are designed. These smart materials are modeled as supercells with metamaterial unit cells of two types that are controlled by an external switching system. The first type is a connected metamaterial super cell that behaves as a conductor, following the permittivity the Drude frequency dependent model, and has a refractive index near to zero. While the second type is a disconnected metamaterial super cell that behaves as a dielectric medium with refractive index greater than unity, and permittivity following the Lorentz frequency dependent model. At the beginning we select the supercell as 100 % of one of the two types and then dilute it by the second type gradually, resulting in a supercell involving both behaviors at the same time in different frequency ranges, which can be applied in many areas including antennas. This study was done using HFSS simulation software.
